UCSB is located in one of the premier diving locations on the California coast. The kelp beds off shore are rich with marine life. The Channel Islands host some of the best diving you can ever hope to find. We offer an open water certification course. Our instructors are top notch and are respected in the local area for their style and extensive years of teaching experience. If you want your introduction to the magnificent underwater world to be an enjoyable experience, then please join one of our classes

OPEN WATER SCUBA CLASS

This class is designed for people with no diving experience. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, participants will receive an Open Water Scuba certification card from a recognized agency. The first class meeting and all lecture sessions meet in the classroom at 6:00pm. The pool sessions will be at the Rec Cen pool after lectures.
In addition to the on campus instruction, there will be five ocean dives (one skin dive and four scuba dives) that will take place over three weekends. PLEASE KEEP YOUR WEEKENDS AVAILABLE NEAR THE END OF CLASS AND AFTER CLASS. Open water dives are traditionally after your sessions in the pool. Your instructor will tell you the schedule in the first class.
Students are required to pass a swimming proficiency exam the first night of class; this test is explained on the class information sheet.
The class fee includes instruction, weights, tanks, air, B.C.'s, regulators and wetsuits (wetsuits only when ocean diving). Additional expenses include a certification fee of $25, your personal equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, boots, gloves, & textbook) which will vary from $200-$250 (or more according to your selection), and an optional boat dive at $60-$75 to the beautiful Channel Islands.
Please read the class information sheet regarding your equipment needs before you sign up for the class.
A completed medical history form is needed before you register for the class. These forms can be downloaded or picked up in the Registration/Cashier's Office in the Rec Cen.
